Shazam, goddamn.  Lightnin’ had a real swell time showin’ my ace, smack dab in the middle between Merle Jagger and The Devil’s Daughters at The Redwood Bar last week.  Fun night, fun crowd, great musicianship… Listening to Danny B. Harvey‘s guitar playing always makes Lightnin’ feel real good and all the guys in Merle Jagger nailed their shit masterfully, including a rockin’ cover of Lightnin’s long time fave, The Rockford Files theme song and some sweet-pussyass drum solos.

  • Wrapping up the tracking at SkR!

Lightnin’ has been bustin’ my own ass, now that the Bad MFs have finished their tracking!  Vocals and guitars on 15 songs ain’t no cakewalk, lemme tellya.  It’s been a lot of fun, and Ian Down has been nothing but a pleasure to work with.  Here’s a couple of pics taken by Sal’s Photos (www.salsphotos.net) whilst Lightnin’ was tracking guitars.  My Parker and Gretsch are the only guitars Lightnin’ used on this whole muddafukka:

Lightnin’ has had some friends come visit me in the studio too!  First guest was Cat Fish, a very talented harp player and singer who fronts the LA blues band The Hollywood Hound Dogs.  Cat came in and laid some evil harp on one of the tracks, sounding like it was blown by Satan himself:

Also, after three and a half years of talking about collaborating, Lightnin’ was visited by Luckyiam of Living Legends!  Lucky came down and spit some badass shit onto one of the new jams that we dogeared for collaboration… still expecting a few more good friends to come add some good stuff!

Anyway, the first single is mixed and mastered, and will be released 12/11/12! Lightnin’s is gonna cover that news in a separate post… first I think I’d better slip the ol’ lady the bone.  I’ll try to get to it after, if Lightnin’ ain’t napping.

Lightnin’ hasn’t been blogging as much as I’ve intended, mostly due to being balls deep in recording activity at SKR Studios.  We got started on pre-production back in early October for a session with Bill Bateman on drums and Lil Donkey on bass:

We did basic tracks for 7 songs, brand new material that y’all ain’t heard before.  We started at 7 PM on October 16 and dragged our run-raggedy asses out of the studio after 2 AM.

Then we got Johnny Lord in for a couple of pre-production sessions and tracked 10 songs with him October 20 (Lil Donkey played live bass for the basic tracks because Whiskey Will had to work):

Lightnin’ thought it was a far fetched notion that we could get drums done for 17 songs, but Johnny and Bill pulled it off masterfully. We got Whiskey Will in a few days later for the bass parts on the 10 songs with John Lord (see photo from previous blog) and captured Clayton’s guitar parts a few days later.

Since then, Lightnin’ has been recording all kinds of guitars and vocals, and even a little percussion on the side. I’m happy to report that we have finished a brand new song “Jesus Help Me”, which will be released as a digital single before the end of the year!

Check out SKR Studios‘ website, you gonna love how Ian Down will make you sound:  http://www.skrstudios.com/

  • Makin’ a new record at SKR studios

Posted by on October 26, 2012

    Shazam, goddamn!

Lightnin’ finally pulled out of a dumb depression (that had its way with me for about 6 months), and we’re now making a new record at Ian Down‘s new SKR Studios. Lightnin’ had the pleasure of working with Ian on the DTLAMF EP when he was at Downtown Sound Studios, and much like Lightnin’, Ian just keeps getting better and better with mileage.   The new record is making Lightnin’ feel better than ever, and I can’t wait to share the new shit with all y’all!

Lightnin’ is blogging from the studio while Whiskey Will Lefevre is laying down his bass parts.  Look out for more detailed blogging in the near future, but for now I can tell you that we have tracked 10 songs with John Lord on drums and 7 songs with Bill Bateman on drums.  Other secret special guests have been tapped for the upcoming sessions, all of whom will be revealed very soon.  In the meantime, Lightnin’ has to join Ian with micromanaging Whiskey’s performances, so I’ma cut this short for now.

For once, Lightnin’ is trying to do the right thing by not gigging whilst we make a record.  We might play a gig or two in November if the tracking is done by then.  I’m gonna get a solo gig in at Madison Tattoo’s Halloween Party this weekend!  Otherwise, no gigs to report, and it feels good to take a break.  Lightnin’ thinks it’s time y’all see a lot less of me on stages in LA, I done been giving it up all over town for a while now…
